LAND CRUISER 40 MEETING EAST 24th Report

Culture, Community, and Connection at the Foot of Mt. Fuji

From June 6 to June 7, 2026, I had the incredible opportunity to attend the LAND CRUISER 40 MEETING EAST 24th (hereafter referred to as LC40).

Held at the expansive Ohnoji Family Campground nestled at the base of Mt. Fuji, this special gathering boasts a rich 24-year history. It is a legendary annual pilgrimage for people who share a deep, unwavering passion for the Toyota Land Cruiser 40 Series.

Rather than just listing the schedule of events, I want to take you inside the experience. This report is about the unique vibe of the Land Cruiser community, the culture embedded in the 40 Series, and the pure energy of the people who live and breathe these trucks. Whether you are asking "What exactly is LC40 Meeting East?" or you are someone who dreams of attending one day, I hope this brings a piece of that mountain air and exhaust note right to your screen.

Chapter 1: What Is LC40 Meeting East?

At its core, LC40 Meeting East is a gathering where Land Cruiser owners—with a special focus on the iconic 40 Series—come together. The venue, Ohnoji Family Campground, provides a massive, nature-filled backdrop where rigs from all over Japan converge.

But the true magic of this event isn’t just about seeing a large collection of rare, vintage trucks in one place.

What makes it unforgettable is experiencing the incredibly tight-knit bond between the people and their machines. It is a place where you don't just look at trucks—you experience the living, breathing culture of the Land Cruiser.

The fact that this event has been running strong for 24 years is a massive achievement in itself. Eras change and automotive technology moves forward, but the community's love for the 40 Series remains unshakable. The torch is gently being passed down to the next generation, and LC40 Meeting East perfectly embodies the power of that shared legacy.

Chapter 2: The Machines — 40 Series in Every Form

Day 1: An Astounding 440 Rigs Take Over the Campground

As I arrived at the venue, I was greeted by an absolute sea of Land Cruisers.

Around 440 trucks lined the fields, and the sheer scale of the sight was breathtaking.

Interestingly, the invitation wasn't exclusive to the 40 Series. Every generation and style of Land Cruiser made an appearance, each showcasing its own unique personality. Owners claimed their favorite spots, pitched their tents, parked their rigs, and kicked back. This wasn't a rigid, sterile car show meant only for display; it was a living community built around a shared automotive lifestyle.

The weather on the first day was unfortunately overcast. Mt. Fuji, which usually towers beautifully over the campground, hid behind a thick blanket of clouds. Yet, the lack of a view didn't matter. What stood out far more than the gray skies was the colorful, vibrant energy radiating from the crowd.

A Kaleidoscope of 40s

The absolute showstoppers of the venue were the rows of colorful 40 Series Land Cruisers.

There were flawless, concours-level restorations; there were trucks wearing a beautiful patina earned through decades of hard work; and there were beautifully preserved, bone-stock survivors. Every single truck was completely different, yet each was stunning in its own right.

You quickly realized that "perfection" wasn't the goal here. Instead, it was all about the love and character the owners poured into their rigs. Whether meticulously maintained, modified to keep them on the road, or intentionally left in their original, weathered state, every 40 Series felt like a piece of rolling art—and at the same time, a dependable daily companion.

Come as You Are: A Culture of Total Acceptance

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the event was the atmosphere of total acceptance.

It didn’t matter if your rig was a pristine restoration, a rusty patina build, or 100% factory original—every single truck and owner was welcomed with open arms.

There was no judgment, and no one was pushing the narrative that a truck has to be spotless or brand new to be cool. The value here is placed on how the truck has lived its life and the fact that it is still being driven today. This inclusive spirit is exactly what makes the Land Cruiser community so incredibly special.

A Family Affair for All Generations

The diversity of the crowd was wonderful to see. Attendees spanned every age group imaginable, from young, first-time owners to seasoned veterans who have been driving the same 40 Series for decades. Watching multiple generations gather around a single truck, swapping stories and laughing together, highlighted the true strength of the community.

It reminded me that a Land Cruiser isn’t just a hobby car. It’s an extension of the family, carrying years of memories and milestones along with it. 40MTG_08

Keeping the Spirit Alive with Heritage Parts

In a very fitting move, the team from Land Cruiser BASE was on-site selling Heritage Parts—genuine, officially reproduced components for vintage models.

This initiative is highly symbolic. It shifts the narrative from "It’s an old truck, so when it breaks, it’s over" to "We want to support you so you can keep driving the truck you love for years to come." The culture here isn’t about locking classic trucks away in a museum to preserve them; it's about keeping them out on the road where they belong. Seeing this support in action made it crystal clear why the 40 Series remains so active and relevant today.

Global Respect for the 40 Series

The event's reputation travels well beyond Japan, drawing enthusiasts from across the globe. Among them were members of the American off-road racing team, Canguro Racing, who traveled to Japan specifically to tour Land Cruiser production facilities and attend this massive gathering.

They mentioned that seeing this many 40 Series trucks together in one place is something you rarely encounter, even in the United States. The scale and sheer passion of the Japanese community blew them away.

More Than a Vehicle: An Infrastructure and a Lifestyle

Walk around the venue, and you’d see creative setups like MJ Coffee Roaster, who converted their Land Cruiser 40 into a fully functional, mobile coffee stand.

It served as a perfect reminder that the 40 Series is more than just a means of transportation. It’s a tool for creating spaces, an enduring piece of infrastructure, and a complete lifestyle.

Five Decades Later, Still Dominating the Field

From heavily weathered trail rigs and military-style BJs to rare, early-production variants, looking out over the lines of vehicles felt like staring at a living timeline of automotive history.

Sitting inside them, you see classic blue steering wheels and beautifully minimalist dashboards. The fact that these 50-year-old interiors are still working hard today carries an undeniable authenticity that photos simply cannot capture. The scene perfectly visualized a common sentiment at the meet: "In this place, a 50-year-old truck is still considered brand new and ready to work."

As evening approached, the heavy clouds finally began to roll away. A gorgeous, clear sky opened up just in time, casting a golden light over the colorful bodies of the Land Cruisers as if celebrating their gathering.

Chapter 3: The Convoy — 200 Land Cruisers Moving as One

Day 2: The Trek up Mt. Fuji to Tarobo

Day two brought the highly anticipated highlight of the weekend: The Convoy. The plan was to roll out from the Ohnoji Campground in a massive line and head up to Tarobo, a scenic viewpoint near the 5th station of Mt. Fuji.

This segment of the weekend was reserved exclusively for the 40 Series. The weather took a turn, bringing overcast skies and a light, misty rain. Given the high elevation, the temperature dropped significantly, making it quite chilly.

Yet, ironic as it sounds, that kind of harsh weather is exactly when a Land Cruiser looks its best.

One by one, an endless line of 40s in every color and configuration emerged through the mist into the Tarobo parking lot. The deep, mechanical rumble of their exhausts echoed through the mountains. The sheer sight and sound of it was enough to give you goosebumps.

About 200 Land Cruiser 40s Gather at Tarobo

By the time the convoy settled, roughly 200 Land Cruiser 40s packed the Tarobo lot. The number is impressive on paper, but standing in the middle of that sea of steel is an experience that numbers simply can't do justice.

Everywhere you looked, owners were huddled together, talking tech, checking out each other's custom setups, and catching up on life. When it came time for the group photo, the rain and cold didn't matter—everyone was wearing a massive smile.

The Magic Continues on the Road Home

"See you right back here next year!"

With promises made and hands shaken, the official event came to a close, and everyone began their journeys home. What struck me most was how the magic didn't end when we left the parking lot.

Even on the public highways heading away from the mountain, long lines of Land Cruisers naturally formed, extending the convoy for miles. Watching them roll down the asphalt, I was reminded of the undeniable charisma of the 40 Series. They don't just drive; they command the road. They don't just park; they tell a story.

Chapter 4: Why It Keeps Going — 24 Years and Counting

How has this event managed to maintain its incredible energy for nearly a quarter of a century? A quote from Sadayoshi Koyari, the legendary former Chief Engineer of the Land Cruiser, perfectly captures the heart of it:

"Being a 40 Series owner for 10 years means you're still a beginner. There are plenty of people who have been driving theirs for 50 years. As for the parts—as long as you all keep ordering them, we can keep making them."

Despite the rain, the thick fog, and the biting cold of Mt. Fuji’s 5th station, 200 vintage trucks showed up. Fans flew in from across the ocean from places like the United States and France. And right alongside the veterans, the next generation of kids and young adults were laughing and taking part.

This beautiful reality proves that the Land Cruiser 40 Series isn't some stagnant, nostalgic relic of the past. It is a living, breathing community that continues to evolve in real-time. Passed down from generation to generation, the soul of the "Yon-Maru" (40 Series) is alive, well, and isn't slowing down anytime soon.
